La Sagrada Familia. I don’t even know where to start. I was told that this place was the ONE place I should go to in Barcelona. And boy am I happy that I listened. Don’t get me wrong- La Sagrada is amazing from any angle and is visible as a standout from multiple parts of the city like a pop-up book.
BUT. Inside. Oh. My. God. I am not a religious person (sorry Dad), but I can appreciate beauty when I see it, and this is a view that will stay with me forever. The audioguide was an absolute must, pointing out interesting things which would be so easy to miss, especially given that there is so so much to see. But believe me- in person is so much better.
Gaudì’s engineering expertise was simply incredible. He modelled much of his work on nature, and amazingly without the use of exact math and calculations, he was able to design and sketch the structure of La Sagrada Familia, without the need for external supports, unlike most other churches of his time. The inside columns support the expansive roof and towers above (including those still yet to be built), by spreading as they rise, like the branches of a tree. Gaudì designed the inside of the church, to be able to support the weight of the towers that will grow taller than the cranes that remain on site currently. The interior of La Sagrada Familia is likened to a forest, with incredible colour and height. Le Sagrada is planned for completion in 2026, marking 100 years since Gaudì’s tragic passing in 1926.
Incredibly, La Sagrada will be even taller than it is today, with the central tower planned to be almost twice the height of the current standing towers. The views the Passion Tower offers over the city is incredible, and the amount of detail that goes into the top of La Sagrada is something not to be underestimated or ignored.
The trip was so worth it!
